Phyllis Malpas provides services that promote health care best practices. She has nearly 30 years of experience in the endoscopy field, and has been actively involved in quality and safety initiatives throughout her career.
Most recently, Phyllis was Nurse Manager, Digestive Disease Center, Endoscopy, at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Medical University Hospital Authority. She previously served as Nurse Manager of the GI Medicine Clinic and Endoscopy Units at MUSC. Prior to working at MUSC, Phyllis was an endoscopy nurse and the Supervisor of Endoscopy Services at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
Phyllis was among those instrumental in developing the Infection Prevention Champions Program developed by the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates through her role on the Board of Directors. She achieved recognition for her unit as a quality center through the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program.
At the Mt. Sinai Medical Center, Phyllis received the top employee honor, the Edna F. Hayes Distinguished Service Award, awarded annually to those demonstrating ‘the highest ideals of hospital service’. Phyllis is a past recipient of the Honored Nurse Designation at MUSC College of Nursing through the Physicians Honoring Nurses Scholarship Fund.
A member of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA) since 1987, Phyllis served the 8000 member organization in numerous regional and national leadership roles, including President and the Director of Legislative Activities on the Board of Directors. She is author or coauthor of several published articles, as well as, a book chapter. She writes and speaks on, nursing and endoscopy and gastroenterology nursing, regionally, nationally and internationally.
Phyllis has an M.A. in Business and Management from Webster University, an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences/Registered Nursing from Lakeland Community College and a B.A., cum laude, from John Carroll University in Sociology.
